Chainbreaker Bike Book: A Rough Guide to Bicycle Maintenience Ethan Clark, Shelley Jackson

Schwinn introduced their 10 speeds in the early 60s starting first with the Continental, a name they resurrected, and later the Varsity. The Varsity was offered between 1960 and 1962 as an 8 speed schwinn ebike and as a 10 speed between 1963 and 1982. Even though the whole idea of the beach cruiser is to slow down your fast-paced life, there’s nothing wrong with speeding up your laid-back life.

The word “Deluxe” takes on a whole new meaning when used to describe the new 1980 Schwinn Deluxe Cruiser. This year’s new Spring Fork smooths out the roughest roads, the distinctive gumwall balloon tires are the perfect combination of luxury and pedaling ease. Cruisers were popular throughout the 1930s and 40s and gained greater postwar success.

In 1934, Schwinn successfully re-styled the B-10E, renaming it the Aero Cycle. While the Aero Cycle featured no technical improvements over the original B-10E, its streamlined frame, faux gas tank, and battery-powered headlight came to define the cruiser ‘look’. Modern cruiser bicycles retain these design elements, (except sometimes for the tank and/or light accessories). Schwinn is credited with kicking off the balloon tire craze when they introduced their offerings for 1933. By 1954, the balloon tire was tired and on its way out. That’s when Schwinn introduced the middleweight.

If you look at our women’s cruiser, Around the Block cruisers, you can get all of those in one speed, three speed, seven-speed, twenty-one speed. And actually, I don’t think there’s any other cruiser company out there really doing a 21-speed cruiser. The reason we did that is that we want the cruiser customer to schwinn beach cruiser be able to have the same gears that any other bike comes with if they want it. Big difference between us and Schwinn, number one is the price point. Now, with that said, Schwinn also does offer independent bike shop beach cruisers. Now, these are gonna be even more expensive, they’re a little bit more high end.

With that said, the other thing with Sixthreezero is we really focus on seats and comfort. So I think, personally, you’re gonna find our seats to be more comfortable than Schwinn seats. We use different foams, different sizes, different springs like that, that are gonna make our cruisers way, way more comfortable, especially as you move up in the price range. If you go to the In the Barrel or the women’s cruisers, you’re gonna see our seats, the bucket saddle, the stitching, it looks really nice, and it’s all about comfort. By 1972, a new wave of lightweight derailleur-equipped bicycles led a wave of new consumer interest in recreational bicycling, resulting in the bike boom. Derailleur-equipped sport bikes or ten speeds inspired by European racing bicycles soon dominated the adult market.

I’d say it might be more money than you need to spend on a beach cruiser, typically for the IBD models, but again, it’s up to you if you like that name, or if the bike speaks to you. I would say generally speaking on their cruisers, there’s no competitive advantage for their higher end models. They look like most cruisers out there, other than they do have the nostalgic feel of having the Schwinn name on it.
