If you make headphones with smallish ear cups, they might go over smaller ears, but sit on bigger ones. So, why bother telling people how big their ears should be? The ear cups here are a bit small, and we Dumbos out there may find these sit on our ears a bit. Now before we jump into the microphone test I do want to quickly point out that the Hesh ANC also have tile support just like the Crusher ANC, Venue, and even the Crusher Evo. Now personally I am indifferent about tile support on these headphones.
The pouch won’t protect from a tumble down the stairs, but it prevents the plastic ear cups from scratching up too much. The ear cups, though, are nice and soft foam covered in the softest leatherette. They’re ultra-cushy, but they do get a bit hot, so expect to need breaks when sporting them in hotter weather. There’s black, grey, mod grey (grey with black finishes), and mod white (white with tan finishes). They’re casual enough to be your everyday headphones but smooth enough to also be worn at work while still looking (deceptively?) respectable.
Sonically, they deliver a bass-forward, highly sculpted sound signature. The ANC (active noise cancellation) performance is about what we expect for this price—nothing groundbreaking, but effective against deep low frequencies. Ultimately, the price is the skullcandy wireless most appealing feature here, though you can also find stronger options like the Sennheiser HD 450BT discounted to a similar amount. There is a microphone built into the Hesh ANC separate from the microphones used with the active noise cancelling features.
Personally I would prefer that these headphones would connect to Skullcandy’s app so that I can adjust their EQ. Whether listening to more acoustic music or your favorite podcast, you won’t be disappointed. The most uncomfortable aspect of the form factor is where the control buttons sit. Placed at the bottom, towards the back of the right headphone, the controls are awkward to get to at first. They’ve opted for a single panel design with the button symbols protruding to indicate where to press.
Working from the office or home each has its own set of complications. While the office requires commuting, it’s much easier to get distracted while working from home. One of the struggles that is shared between the office and home is noise, which is distracting no matter where a person is.
There aren’t any sound enhancement features to help customize their sound profile either. They’re also prone to slight inconsistencies in treble delivery. Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, get more bass depth than they need. It doesn’t sound terrible, but the lower-register instrumentation steps forward from its subtle anchoring role and occasionally sounds booming. The higher-register brass, strings, and vocals retain their bright presence and the focus of the mix, but this isn’t a sound signature for those seeking a transparent listen.
While it won’t protect your headphones from drops, it can help keep dust off of them.
