Igloo Trailmate Cooler Review Big Wheels, Nice Features . But Does it Perform Well?

We think you should add this product to your potential cooler list if you want something more mobile. The big things missing from making this cooler excel in ice retention are not being rotomolded and not utilizing a large rubber gasket. This allows a bit more cold air to escape than we would have hoped. That being said, the inclusion of thick walls, Cool Riser Technology, and Ultratherm insulation do help make up for some of this. Ice life will vary depending on how much (and what type) of ice you use, but you can typically expect from 40 to 85 hours of ice life.

The next most notable feature is the glide handle that also doubles as a butler tray. This feature is something that you will find on very few other coolers on the market and it is a great way to stand out from the crowd while having a nifty feature. Finally, one of the most important aspects is the mobility of this cooler.

It has an ice retention of 7 days and happens to be rotomolded. Yeti have their own wheeled cooler, and it is, of course, magnificent. Yeti Tundra Haul, the latest addition to Yeti Tundra family, will keep your ice icy for up to 10 days, has fairly large wheels, and has a capacity in the region of 45 cans. Igloo makes a lot of products, many of which we think are excellent values for what they bring to the table. Unfortunately, we don’t feel the same way about the Trailmate Marine.

Second, there is a removable dry storage box on the front of the cooler so you can and keep the phone/keys in there without fear of water or sand damaging then. You can pull your load 50% easier courtesy of the comfort and leverage of Igloo’s horizontal dual-trigger steel Glide™ handle that has both locking and telescoping functions. It boasts THERMECOOL™ foam — which is a cleaner, eco-friendly insulation — in the body and lid which delivers superior ice retention performance.

This includes things such as a butler try, storage pocket, built-in bottle openers, food basket, optional LED light, and more. Head out to your favorite picnic spot with your meal packed in the Igloo Trailmate™ Journey 70 qt. A built-in stand on the lid provides space to store your mobile device.

Our least favorite aspect in terms of usability is the drain found in this cooler. Though it has a wide channel to help empty it of meltwater, the inside of the drain also is turned into a protruding tunnel into the interior by a white plastic tube. Why this is a thing, we’re not sure, as it made the Trailmate the least conducive to emptying via drain plug of any model we tested. It is worth mentioning, however, that some users noted concerns about the Trailmate’s durability. If you plan on subjecting it to extreme conditions such as rolling it down a mountainside, you may find it lacking in sturdiness.

The Igloo managed to hold refreshing brew temperatures at or below 50º for an additional several hours, for a total of 3.4 days of cold beers. Though we aren’t totally shocked at this lackluster performance when considering the Trailmate is a relatively thin cooler, standing up to some rather thick, rotomolded competition. And realistically, a wheeled cooler like this is less likely to be your choice to strap into your canoe for that 10-day whitewater trip, and more likely to be your choice for a picnic in the park. In which case this level of insulation will surely get you through a single warm summer’s day.

This is a frequently asked question which makes a lot of sense for anyone who’s getting a cooler no matter its size, quality or features. The Trailmate all-terrain cooler has been around since 2016 and in so many ways it has broken plenty of records being one of the coolest and most practical coolers. Today, we’re glad to be issuing our Igloo Trailmate All-Terrain Wheeled Cooler review because simply we’ve waited enough to do so. The Trailmate Journey features an included dry food basket, storage compartment, fishing rod slots, and a massive interior space. For retail purchases returned without a receipt, the refund will be issued as a store merchandise

credit at the lowest price within the last 90 days.

According to Igloo, this cooler will keep your ice icy for up to 4 days. That’s where you really feel the pinch in the fact that this cooler is not rotomolded. However, just like we said before, we think the features and the price make it worth it. Though at first glance the Trailmate looks like a great deal, we’re not so sure. Its wide wheels and high clearance help it navigate a variety of challenging terrain, but the performance of this cooler in insulation and particularly its lackluster durability leaves us wanting more. But if wheels and features are what you’re after and a budget is what you’re on, the Igloo might be the right fit for your life.

Typically you can expect the ice in your Igloo cooler to last 2-3 days while keeping your food and beverages safe. The construction of the cooler is strong and durable; it’s a cooler built to last. Though not rotomolded (like the Yeti Tundra Haul), it does still have a thick layer of their THERMECOOL™ insulation that is eco-friendly and promises to keep ice frozen for up to four days.
