Schwinn High Sierra: 30 Year Old Bike Review

A growing number of US teens and young adults were purchasing imported European sport racing or sport touring bicycles, many fitted with multiple derailleur-shifted gears. Schwinn decided to meet the challenge by developing two lines of sport or road ‘racer’ bicycles. One was already in the catalog — the limited production Paramount series. The Paramount series had limited production numbers, making vintage examples quite rare today.

These allow you to choose from a wide range of gears, so you can easily adjust your speed and power to match the terrain. IGNAZ SCHWINN was born in the little town of Hardheim, province of Baden, Germany. The second of seven children, his father died when he was eleven and Ignaz was sent to vocational school. An intense interest in the high-wheeled “ordinary” bicycle of his day, led him from town to town working on bicycles and bicycle parts whenever he found the opportunity. In time, he came to work in the machine shop of Heinrich Kleyer, who soon employed him as a designer & works manager for the Kleyer factory. Kleyer manufactured some of the first “safety” bicycles in Germany.

You should feel comfortable and in control while riding. Mountain bikes are specifically designed to withstand rugged outdoor trails. Their large, textured tires are equipped to handle a range of different terrain, and their sturdy frames will keep you feeling stable and supported as you climb hills and zip down narrow dirt paths. Now that you know what to expect from a schwinn mountain bike, you might be interested in knowing what other cheap mountain bike options are out there. Well, you can check out our list of the best value hardtail mountain bikes, but we do list bikes up to $1000 in price on that list. So, I’ve compared all of the models currently on the market to determine what your best options are right now.

The bike’s strong steel frame feels sturdy and durable, and its suspension fork promises to smooth out some of the bumps in your ride. The Schwinn High Timber is a traditional steel hardtail mountain bike inspired by bikes of the 1990s. With a simple design and understated style paired with modern components, this bike may be the closest to a go-anywhere, do-almost-anything mountain bike. The tires are suitable for light to medium-duty off-road riding, but should also perform well on hard-pack trails and pavement. One of the best features of this bike is its suspension fork, which helps absorb bumps and thumps to give you a smoother and more comfortable ride. The 24-speed trigger shifters and front and rear derailleurs make gear changes a breeze, so you can tackle any terrain with ease.

I replaced the chain and greased the bottom bracket and hubs. I also used a spoke wrench to make some minor tweaks to the wheels to true them up. The High Sierra makes an excellent touring bike for those who are on a budget. The best thing I can say about roller-cam brakes is that they perform very well when properly adjusted. They provide excellent stopping power and stay adjusted. I have not had to touch them since installing the new pads.

This includes new forks, better derailleurs, better handlebars and so much more. Twist shifters tend to be a quick and easy way to tell the quality of a bike. Unfortunately the Incline is equipped with twist shifters. While aesthetically, the quality of the bike was fantastic, I did run into quality issues. The front shock squeaked when I went over bumps, and the front derailleur wouldn’t shift through all of the gears.

The Protocol 1.0 is a great investment for anyone looking for a reliable and responsive mountain bike. It’s perfect for riders of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders. If you want a quality bike that can handle any terrain, the Schwinn Mountain Bike Protocol 1.0 is the way to go.
