I wouldn’t consider this an essential item, but it is nice to have it at the ready in the car. Weather is uncertain and you never know how annoying bugs will be.

Like the CLAM, you can buy wind resistance panels separately if you’re camping somewhere particularly breezy. It will keep you dry with a water-resistant roof with taped seams. The CLAM will even keep you from getting sunburned by offering 50+ UV ray protection. Also, we often review or link to products and services we regularly use and think you might find helpful. However, when it comes to rain, this tent prefers to collect it rather than shed it. An open vestibule with an attached floor means while you may be dry inside your tent, all your gear will be taking a bath.

In our tests one camper took less than 10 minutes to put it up on the first try. Two shorter aluminum poles cross to support the roof while four longer poles join to the roof poles at the top of the tent and coleman instant tent slide into pegs at the ground. The tent roof is made of polyester taffeta treated with a DWR (durable water repellent) coating. The walls are made of fine no-see-um nylon mesh edged with polyester taffeta.

When stowed, it measures approximately 34 x 74 cm and weighs around 19.5 kg. The tent has a water pressure resistance of 3,000 mm for the fly and bedroom, and 2,000 mm for the floor and living room. The materials used include 75D polyester taffeta for the fly and roof, 68D polyester taffeta for the inner, and 210D polyester oxford for the floor. The Coleman has even more extra space at 120 square feet of floor area. But with this extra size means extra set-up time at 3 minutes and a whopping 45 pounds folded down. The tent took our team 14 minutes and 20 seconds to pitch fully — much longer than the majority of our other tents and with much more frustration.

The REI Co-op Screen House Shelter is an intuitively designed, easy-to-erect picnic tent that offers protection from sun, bugs, and mild rain showers. Though the boxy design is basic, in our tests we found that this camping shelter offered the best combination of functionality, durability, and affordability of all the tents we tried. We used the shelters for sun protection, setting up camp chairs inside one and a play mat and toddler toys inside another, and placing the large Clam shelter over a picnic table piled with markers and coloring books. Our favorite canopy tent is a simply designed, comfortable shelter that offers protection from bugs, sun, and rain. Sure, you can retreat to your RV, but we want to enjoy the outdoors when camping. High-quality screen tents can help you do that with relative comfort.

The double-thick Polyguard 2X™ fabric stands up to the elements–season after season. Once it’s up, the UVGuard™ material offers 50+ UPF protection from the sun’s dangerous rays. When the fun’s done, the frame folds down for compact storage. Though all of these shelters are self-standing and staking them may not be strictly necessary in calm weather, it’s wise to always do so in case the wind picks up unexpectedly. Before staking out a tent, make sure all of its doors are zipped closed to avoid staking it too tightly and straining the zippers. Like regular camping tents, these camping gazebos are not intended to be left up for extended periods, as the fabrics are susceptible to UV damage.

It’s constructed with heavy-duty 210-denier poly oxford walls and the heftiest bug-blocking no-see-um mesh we’ve encountered in any tent. The thicker, darker netting also makes the whole structure shadier, even without the optional side panels. In between trips, we turned a neighbor’s large, flat yard into an ad hoc camping-gazebo testing ground. We erected our shelters just in advance of a 24-hour rain and checked for leaking and rainy-day ambience midstorm. We also timed setup and breakdown times for each shelter, and we repeatedly zipped and unzipped doors and windows, looking for annoying snags.

When it’s time to pack up, some models break down in a few easy steps and slip it into the rolling storage bag included.
