I wouldn’t consider this an essential item, but it is nice to have it at the ready in the car. Weather is uncertain and you never know how annoying bugs will be.
Like the CLAM, you can buy wind resistance panels separately if you’re camping somewhere particularly breezy. It will keep you dry with a water-resistant roof with taped seams. When stowed, it measures approximately 34 x 74 cm and weighs around 19.5 kg. The tent has a water pressure resistance of 3,000 mm for the fly and bedroom, and 2,000 mm for the floor and living room. The materials used include 75D polyester taffeta for the fly and roof, 68D polyester taffeta for the inner, and 210D polyester oxford for the floor. The Coleman has even more extra space at 120 square feet of floor area. But with this extra size means extra set-up time at 3 minutes and a whopping 45 pounds folded down. The tent took our team 14 minutes and 20 seconds to pitch fully — much longer than the majority of our other tents and with much more frustration.
The REI Co-op Screen House Shelter is an intuitively designed, easy-to-erect picnic tent that offers protection from sun, bugs, and mild rain showers. Though the boxy design is basic, in our tests we found that this camping shelter offered the best combination of functionality, durability, and affordability of all the tents we tried. We also timed setup and breakdown times for each shelter, and we repeatedly zipped and unzipped doors and windows, looking for annoying snags.
