Gas Grills by Coleman

The RoadTrip® X-Cursion™ along with the Coleman RoadTrip® 225,  Coleman RoadTrip® LX, and the Coleman RoadTrip® 285 models all use the Coleman Swaptop™ accessories. We purchased griddle accessory (link) and the stovetop burner accessory (link). They also make a full griddle attachment but we didn’t have a need for that. The unit comes with two cast iron grill tops so when paired with the griddle and the burner offer a variety of configurations. Overall I find the Coleman RoadTrip Classic LX is the perfect grill for Camping, RVing, day trips, and even as your main home grill. It is a solid, well built and good quality grill that should give you years of performance if maintained properly.

I haven’t taken it on any camping trips yet, but when I do, I think I will likely detach the legs and use it as a tabletop grill just to help pack it into the car better. Don’t rely on your owners manual alone for your Coleman grill model number. The owners manuals are frequently mixed up at retail outlets, especially for pre-assembled units. Find the CSA plate/label on your grill to get the correct model number.

As for performance, this model knocked it out of the park, with some of the highest scores we collected for heat regulation and we observed no flare-ups due to rendered fat. We recommend this grill to cooks who are interested in grilling for a crowd, as the XL surface area tends to lose heat quickly when accommodating just one or two pieces of steak or fish. As one of the sturdier models we tested, one tested noted it was a good option for apartment dwellers and those looking to grill occasionally. It packs up efficiently, and when fully assembled has two wing-like side tables that are helpful for prep and tool storage.

This grill was the same RoadTrip series with all my complaints addressed. As you can see the most noticeable difference from the other RoadTrip grills is the elimination of the wheeled base. The stand completely folds to a flat and easily stored item and fits in the Coleman RoadTrip Storage Bag, purchased separately.

Few things compare to the taste of freshly grilled foods prepared on a barbeque grill. However, it would be quite difficult to use a full-size grill at a picnic or while camping in the woods. When selecting the best grill for your needs, it is important to consider how much room you want for cooking. If you’re cooking for yourself or a small group, a compact grill is probably fine. If you want a grill for tailgating, backyard parties, or large-group base camping, we’d recommend a larger tabletop model or a wheeled model like the Roadtip 285.

We cranked this grill to its highest setting and used an infrared thermometer to take temperature readings every five minutes for a period of twenty minutes. Between the 15-minute and 20-minute intervals, its temperature only varied by five degrees, settling in at a maximum of 696°F. From our culinary experience, we know that the best temperatures for searing range from 300 to 500 degrees, depending on the cut of meat or vegetable of choice.

Are you planning an enjoyable road trip with friends or family? Obviously, no street trip will be really memorable unless you’re able to enjoy delicious meals together. This is going to be particularly simple once you choose the best Coleman gas grill along on the trip. As you’d expect from such a powerhouse, this grill gets super hot and produced an “impeccably crispy” crust during our steak test. Although a bit too large to be considered seriously for camping, the Napoleon also scored high in packability and transport—it collapses “like a stroller,” and has large, hefty wheels. A clip on the lid keeps everything in place in this beach- and apartment-friendly grill.

This grill might not be the smallest, but it’s evident that Coleman took great care in designing the LXE to make sure that is was very easy to set up, tear down and tote around. Of the four areas we considered, the RoadTrip® scored lowest in durability. Right out of the box, within minutes of assembling the grill, I barely bumped the grill on the concrete coleman grill as I was transitioning it into its collapsed position and broke the handle. While this was admittedly due to user error, it shouldn’t have been that easy to break. Coleman does have replacement parts on their website but we were unable to locate this particular part. A little duct tape fixed the problem and the rest of the grill seems sturdy and well made.

As I mentioned previously, it can go from compact to completely set up and ready to light in less than a couple of minutes. It takes less than a minute to erect the stand from a folded unit to its cooking position. It takes one minute more to connect the regulator to the LP bottle and attach it coleman grill to the back of the grill. I like to call the Coleman RoadTrip LXE the starter version of the RoadTrip line of portable grills. This indicates grill temperature when only one or two of the burners are on, to represent a cooking task where the food is placed between or alongside the direct flame.
