Ozark Trail Backpack

Some hikers may choose to continue on Trace Creek to the Taum Sauk section, but OT thru-hikers should head west onto Middle Fork/John Roth Memorial section to complete the longer route. This hilly 26-mile segment gains over 2,600 feet of elevation over a contoured landscape crossing brooks, streams, and wetlands, as well as small savannahs of oak and hickory hardwoods. Camp at Highway DD trailhead near the section’s start or Harper Spring around the 15 mile-mark. If you’re searching east of the Rockies for stunning scenery, technical terrain, and a long hike option sans the AT crowds, this is your pick. Along the way you’ll cross paths with fewer people than you can count on two hands—just keep an eye out for mountain bikers and horseback riders who frequent the multi-use sections of the trail.

They didn’t hurt my shoulders as I carried the bag around with me. When my bag got wet from a few rides, it easily and quickly dried because of its thin material, I really liked that. The bag has one large compartment and then a smaller one on the front/side. Overall this is a great small bag to take along with you. Just about every other daypack I’ve had falls apart under the weight of my books (med school).

The Spot also has a PowerTap function; find the small starburst icon on the side of the light and touch it to immediately bump the power up to max, and then touch it again to revert to low. The Spot 400 has three LED lights, two white and one red.The main “spot” LED throws white light far down the path in front of you, which is useful when you are hiking or walking your dog at night. We could see trees (and other neighborhood dogs) at a distance of about 100 meters. The Spot also offers a flood option (a white LED that casts a wider beam) and a red LED; like the main LED, both of these max out at 400 lumens and are dimmable. Bursting with comfort and organizational options this 20 Liter daypack has a spacious main compartment that is both laptop friendly and hydration compatible, and a bottom thermal insulated pocket.

For the kids’ headlamps, we sent them off to two very discerning kids (who’ve been living with gear testers for years), and we asked them to use the headlamps for all manner of adventures. It may be intimidating from the tee box, but the large green provides plenty of landing space with additional room right of the green for a safe miss. Avoid the left side to stay out of the heavy rough, deep bunker, and the lake. Wetlands give way to ridgelines at the start of the Blair Creek section.

The front of the pack features dual zippered pockets for keeping smaller or less-used items organized. The electronics pocket is fleece lined to keep screens and finishes in perfect condition. It’s just an all-around pack that is going to perform in the urban or literal jungle. These don’t cast very far into the distance—definitely not the promised 26 feet on high. But they are fun to look at and likely safer for children, who might not know they should avoid staring directly into the light. Upon first setting up the Wiz, we found it tough to get the batteries into the housing (it’s intentionally hard to pry open, for safety).

This par 4 angles to the right beyond the right-side fairway bunker. Hug your tee shot as close to that bunker as possible for the best approach into the green. A miss left of the green will create a challenging up-and-down. Favor the right side on your tee shot as bunkers protect the left side of the fairway on this par 4. A right-sided approach will also give you the best angle into the green which is guarded by a large bunker on the left side with plenty of room to miss on the right.
