Many experts we spoke with agree that training wheels render a bicycle little more than a dangerously tippy four-wheeled tricycle and don’t teach a child to balance. After all this—and after consulting with fellow parents and industry professionals—we’re judging the Strider 12 Sport as the best balance bike for most kids (and their parents). We spent about 40 hours researching and assembling 13 balance bikes, and subjected them to a cadre of highly energetic 2- to 8-year-olds. Woom is recalling all of its Woom 1 bikes (our upgrade pick) made between 2018 to 2021 for a problem with the handlebar stem.
The bike’s 24-inch wheelbase, common to most of our picks, gives the bike a good mix of stability and agility. Most brands that produce cargo bikes also sell various accessories to tailor the storage/cargo space to your needs. Items like front/rear baskets, bike trailer attachments, child seats, and mounts for pannier bags can add space and customize huffy trail runner cargo-carrying capability. This larger hauling capacity and extended length can mean trickier handling and a much heavier bike.
If you own one, do not use it until you’ve checked to see if it is affected and, if so, repaired it with a free kit that Woom will provide. Between a pump and standalone gauge, or 2) if you’re really lazy, outright guesswork. The end of the Superia came when things were starting to (literally) fall apart. The pedals, which were made of cheap plastic to begin with, finally cracked and broke to pieces while riding. The Strider’s straight, mountain bike–style handlebars are a kid-size 14.5 inches wide, which makes the bike very responsive, while the tapered grips are toddler-friendly at 2 to 2.5 inches in diameter. Like most balance bikes sold today, the grips feature bulbs on their ends that prevent not only torso impalement from jackknifed handlebars but also scraped fingers from inevitable visits to gravel or pavement. The narrow seat allows for easy mounts and dismounts and features a gentle tilt downward from front to back to help keep your child saddled. Its surface is not too slick and not too sticky and comprises a durable yet just-soft-enough foam rubber. The bike comes with two easily interchangeable seat tubes—one short (8.6 inches) and one long (11.5 inches)—allowing adjustment heights from 11 to 20 inches, the widest range of any bike we tested and among the widest of any balance bike. Combined with handlebars that can rise nearly 5 inches on their own, you have a tiny bike that could be comfortably ridden by our 2-year-old tester and even my 8-year-old son.
We felt confident going on longer rides without the risk of being stuck miles from the trailhead with a 50lb bike and no power. Maybe want to explore trails that are just out of reach on a standard mountain bike. However, we wouldn’t let either of these drawbacks deter you from the Turbo Levo Comp, and we recommend it to anyone looking for a refined and highly adjustable electric mountain bike. If you want to save huffy bikes a few thousand dollars, check out the Commencal Meta Power TR Ride, which didn’t score as high but has great downhill performance and only slightly less range. Larger motors generally produce more torque, accelerate faster, and easily support higher speeds. Hub-drive motors are located in the center of one of the wheels (typically the rear wheel) and transfer power directly to the wheel where it is mounted.
The handlebar grips are marginally kid-scale with a grip circumference of 3.5 inches, and the seat is also right at the edge of what a little kid would need at a large 5.5 by 8 inches. You can easily raise and lower the seat via a quick-release lever from a minimum height of 12.25 inches to a max of 15.5 inches (a shorter max height than both our main pick and the runner-up) while you can raise the handlebar stem 3 inches. The Banana’s super-light foam tires and wheels work fine on paved and carpeted surfaces, but were quite slippy on kitchen linoleum and hardwood floors. It also was nearly assembled right down to its pre-attached wheels, which were perfectly tightened so they spun freely without any play.
This is usually
written as a range (for instance, “90 to 115 psi”) since there are reasons why you’d want to be on the higher or lower
end, which we’ll get into shortly. However, some expert cyclists are cautious of floor pumps with gauges, as the accuracy of the gauge can svary and may be
off by as much as 10 PSI. On the plus side, if the gauge is consistent you can calculate the difference and adjust your
target PSI to compensate.
