Mold is always a killer when it comes to things like camp chairs, but UV light may be the biggest cause for concern. Tempting as it may be, don’t leave your chair set up on a nice day with the intention of coming back in a few hours. It takes a couple of minutes to store but will significantly extend the lifetime.

Within the realm of Coleman products, their Big-N-Tall Quad is a true beast of a chair. With a max capacity of 600lbs, cushioned back, and self-bailing seat, it’s one of the only models that can give the Cooler Quad a run for its money. We also really enjoyed their Aluminum Deck Chair, which brings the same wide seat and throws in a side table at the cost of easy transport. Even though Coleman’s Cooler Quad is one of the larger chairs that we’ve tested, it’s by no means the heaviest. Weighing in at a negligible 8lbs 2oz, the Cooler Quad won’t punish you for parking a little ways away from your intended destination.
The carry bag is rather thin, letting you feel whatever section of the chair rests upon your back or side. At least you probably won’t be carrying it terribly far, and it’s not awful over short coleman instant tent stretches. The Ozark Trail Oversized Mesh Chair from Walmart, although similar to our pick in size, was far less comfortable, with rough-feeling material that was obviously of lower quality.

The cooler in the armrest sticks out at an odd angle and resists being squeezed back into a sack that’s barely large enough to hold it. Our not-too-discriminating underage testers liked all the kids’ chairs, though over time we found several coleman camping chair reasons to declare the REI Camp Chair the best of the bunch. The REI chair’s polyester seat material feels both more forgiving and more durable than the thinner material on the Ozark Trail Kids’ Folding Camp Chair from Walmart.
However, unless you hit the exact right position, the unsupported fabric does very little to hold your head up. Like most chairs of this type, the Coleman Oversized Quad comes with an over-the-shoulder carry bag. Portable outdoor chairs are also helpful for anyone who doesn’t have the room or budget for permanent backyard furniture. And they can save your back, make it easier to juggle a picnic plate and a cold beverage, and generally help you to relax comfortably outdoors.
The included carry handle makes it even more convenient to transport from one place to another. The Coleman Cooler Quad isn’t for trekking miles down the trail, but at the very least, you can throw it across your back on a sling and have your hands free to carry a few extra things to the campsite. The makings of great camping chairs aren’t all that complicated, and Coleman’s Cooler Quad hits the nail on the head.
The Helinox Chair One weighs about 2 pounds, compresses smaller than a 2-liter bottle of soda, and is the most comfortable and easy to stow of the three top backpacking chairs we tested. Like competing chairs, the Chair One has a nylon and mesh seat and aluminum legs, which are linked with shock cord (the chair legs are made out of the same material as high-end tent poles). Because people use outdoor chairs for an array of purposes and have different preferences when it comes to comfort, it was almost impossible to choose just one best chair. We did select our favorite upright chair for car camping and tailgating, and then additional low-to-the-ground, ultra-lightweight, and canopy picks, as well as a great chair for kids. Today’s specialty backpacking chairs are impressively small and light. They’re also far more expensive and significantly less comfortable than typical full-size camp chairs.
