We like to go on day hikes around our area and my other backpacks are much bulkier and heavier than this one. We live close to Zion National Park and it gets very hot during the day, so you want to make sure to always have water with you. I was fitted for a 45-liter bag since I needed to carry camera equipment, extra socks, knee sleeves, and extra supplies my wife didn’t need to deal with. Be aware, this is a daypack, intended for lighter loads and shorter distances.
The Ozark Trail Association marks and improves the trail and ensures backpacking campsites are well maintained. What’s more, the OT offers many things to see and experience for both seasoned and first-time backpackers. I sweated just a bit but not too much since the walk was short (and I didn’t want to sweat after a shower).

I never carry bear spray and only used a bear canister once in the High Sierras of California where it was required. I use a bag for food and tie it in a tree, but mainly to keep the little critters out.
Also a good choice for youngsters who are new to hiking, or who need a rugged pack for toting school items. The high back with the pillow headrest is the best feature. I also like that it has aluminum arms which are more supportive ozark trail chair than the canvas ones usually found on these types of chairs. There’s a very nice drink holder (won’t hold your coffee cup, must be in an insulated tumbler) and a mesh pocket to hold your cell phone or other similar-sized item.
Before purchasing this pack I used a more traditionally styled, and heavier, backpack for daily walks. I recently attended a seminar that explained the major difference of carrying lighter gear while outdoors. And I do day hikes in Sequoia National Park and on the coast. Here’s another AWESOME thing about the Ozark Trail Atka day pack. It’s sized to fit every airline’s carry-on size requirements. My son and daughter each took one of these on a trip through Europe and they carried it on every plane, train, and bus they rode without any problems.
This is a personal choice because I’d rather have some wetness on my lower body and not be sweating and cold all over. I sweat under the best of rain shells when hiking hard in moderately cold temps. The umbrella gives me a little roof to walk under, but it’s not for everybody. I’ve also used a poncho which kept my upper body dry, but I still get clammy. Many never think about the actual weight of the pack, but some are close to 5-pounds.
