Peterson System Pipes Cool Smoking Pipes

I have always been attracted to it and admired the classic shape, size and finish. They were offering the same pipe in various finishes and stem fittings. Having had the opportunity to see the pipe ‘in the flesh’, I am amazed at the quality, feel, looks and the smoking performance. Normally with the newer unsmoked high grades that come into my collection, they remain un smoked.

Frederick would soon bring on Latvian immigrant Charles Peterson, and they went about renovating their styles and beginning a brand new way to think about and craft a tobacco pipe. By 1896, they were getting recognized in the 1896 International Tobacco Trades Exhibition in London with two gold medals, for chacom tobacco pipes “Best Finished Pipe” and “Best Patent Pipe.” Friedrich and Heinrich Kapp opened their first tobacco shop in 1865 back on Grafton Street in Dublin, Ireland. The brothers simply christened their new shop “Kapp Brothers”, and had little idea that they were participating in the birth of a true tobacco legend.

The same procedure was later adopted for the next series, Return of Sherlock Holmes. The Peterson Manx (Laxey Pipes Ltd.) Isle of Man factory partnership ceased operation about 1981 and the production of all African Meerschaum pipes was moved to Dublin and continued there until 1986. Peterson then went on to produce more non limited versions of the Mark Twain pipes, this time without numbers, from 1983 through to 1989. English made Peterson pipes actually spanned the period between the pre Republic and Republic eras.

All are fitted with nickel mounts and army style mouthpiece. There are fourteen models to choose from, with a choice of highly polished or rustic finish. Nearly all are bents, except for one straight model, shape reference 31.

This series is a result of the union of hallmarked silver and mellowed briar. This series utilizes the highest quality bowls, combined with the intricacy of working the silver by hand so the cap fits the pipe perfectly. With that information in hand I knew what I was dealing with in terms of the stamping and the age of this pipe. I knew from the information that the pipe was made during the Republic Era between 1950 and 1989. Once you’ve got a smooth surface, give the mud 3 days to dry and you’re ready to smoke.

However I made an exception with this beauty and boy it was worth it. These large hand made pipes normally retail for around $200 $ 400 depending on shape and finish. Varying from Smooth, Sandblast and Rustic finishes and Straight Billiard and Bent shapes.

These special pipes, all of which are silver mounted, are rare and a limited number are available each year. Shapes can vary depending on availability of suitable raw materials”. I have adapted this section concentrating on the period following chacom tobacco pipes 1950, the made in the Irish Republic era and the different near modern Peterson grades and series, which should bring us up to the time period from the 1990s onward. Here are photo’s of this marvelous unique pipe, now complete once more.

All Peterson Standard series pipes are fitted with army-style mouthpieces and have nickel mounts. The patented Peterson System traps the moisture in the pipe which results in a dry smoke every single time. The lip of this unique system also helps to enhance the effectiveness of that graduated bore. It works by directing the flow of the smoke up and away from the smoker’s tongue. This even distribution of the smoke eliminates the chance of bitterness and tongue bite. The shape is designed in a way specifically contoured so the smoker’s tongue will rest comfortably in that depression under the opening.

The company is renamed Kapp & Peterson. In 1890 Peterson came with the system pipe, a great invention that is still the basis for the ever-continued success of this brand. The system pipe has a separate space in the pipe, where the moisture can collect, making the pipe cool and chacom tobacco pipes dry. A few years later the P-Lip, the unique Peterson mouthpiece, appears. With both the company has achieved many successes and prizes. This characterizes the company, which continues to make the same models. Peterson is also known for the beautiful silver applications.
