As a result the bail will not detach from an assembled lantern. Light a match or lighter and hold it below the mantle(s). Open the valve one-quarter turn and wait for the mantle(s) to ignite. These instructions were written to help you safely light and operate an old lantern that you have not lit before, or has been in storage for a very long time.

These two Quick-Lite lanterns are unusual because the pump is only partially mounted in the fount. The check valve can be seen between the pump and filler cap. Air from the pump is piped up to the top of the fount.

As mentioned by Eagle732, I’ll bet it’s the generator…if the lantern is 20 years old and has the original generator, it’s due for replacement. Use fresh Coleman or and other brand of camp fuel. This continuity clearly appeals to Wilmot and his personal Coleman collection is a show of respect for this timelessness. Wilmot says he’s also cleaned and shined up a number of lanterns, and gotten them working correctly, in order to give them to friends.

The Northstar doesn’t have a lot of fancy features. It is a portable propane lantern with an InstaStart that works well. Its long handle does not get too hot to the touch, even on the highest setting, and the large fuel adjuster knob enables you to control how brightly it shines. The hard plastic carrying case has two sides that fold down so that the lantern can be easily packed for travel. This product comes with a metal guard to protect the globe and reduce rattling.

This lantern was made for the military to help direct planes to airfields in or near enemy territory. These lanterns, dated June ’59, are in Mike Rainey’s (left) & Dean DeGroff’s (right) collections. By November, 1951, Coleman’s Model 200A had been introduced, replacing Model 200 above. These earliest 200A lanterns had green painted steel founts and, by November, also had the Coleman decal. Coleman stamped Model 220C on the lanterns they made from 1944 until 1947.

Coleman also makes cheaper lanterns today that run off its ubiquitous propane cartridges, but Wilmot collects only the gas lanterns and he isn’t done collecting yet. Model 227 preceding (right image) has flat spaces in the ventilator where these brackets and bail tabs were not used. This ventilator is from an MF-125 in Russ Baldwin’s collection.

This is the large tube that runs from the base of the globe to the top of the lantern, the gas generator tube insets into the air tube.
