Old Town Coleman: How to light an old Coleman lantern

You may be able to clean it, or new ones can be purchased. Just wanted to see if anyone here has any expertise with Coleman fuel – Coleman lanterns… Mantles (the little white things that illuminate when you light the lantern) are super cheap, so stock up to be sure that you never run out. They only last for a few uses, and if it has been a while since you last lit the lantern, you should swap them out for new ones.

These lanterns are in Jerry Engbring’s collection. This Coleman 200A lantern has been modified with an elaborate globe cage and 3 cylindrical globes, the innermost being a Fresnel lens. An outer infrared filter keeps visible light from shining out the sides.

A yellow, weaker light might indicate bad, wrong type, or old fuel. We lit campfires, cooked, played board games, had parties, and even chopped wood on moonless nights with this lantern. During one of our parties, coleman grill we put the Northstar near Grandma when she was chilly. This lantern does make a bit of a hissing sound when it is lit, and when the fuel is about to run out it makes a rather loud whistling noise.

These two Quick-Lite lanterns are unusual because the pump is only partially mounted in the fount. The check valve can be seen between the pump and filler cap. Air from the pump is piped up to the top of the fount.

Coleman also makes cheaper lanterns today that run off its ubiquitous propane cartridges, but Wilmot collects only the gas lanterns and he isn’t done collecting yet. The brackets in the middle portion of the ventilator center the mica globe (image above). The detents in the bail tabs (image below) hold the bail upright. Model 227 preceding (right image) has flat spaces in the ventilator where these brackets and bail tabs were not used. This ventilator is from an MF-125 in Russ Baldwin’s collection.

As a result the bail will not detach from an assembled lantern. Light a match or lighter and hold it below the mantle(s). Open the valve one-quarter turn and wait for the mantle(s) to ignite. Remove the fuel filler cap and pour all the old fuel into an approved container for disposal. You can find a local hazardous waste recycling facility by doing an internet search. The coleman lantern 17B comes with an installed wall-mounted AC as standard equipment.
