Good Design: The Ozark Trail 1-Person Backpacking Tent

I’m now going to the Walmart’s to return all three items. I thought Ozark Trail was supposed to be a good camping equipment manufacturer. I will make a point of staying away from Ozark stuff in future. Same day I bought the tent I also bought Ozark’s ‘matchless single mantle lantern’.

I could make a better shelter out of cardboard boxes and scotchgard. Also using a ground cover under the tent (seems obvious to me) will help prevent water from coming in from the underside of the tent. Thank you OZARK for making ozark tent camping nights with small children just a little more difficult!!!! Good thing we are all troopers and we didn’t let your HORRIBLE product ruin our trip. Not the best, but certainly better than other shelters I’ve stayed in.

There are no vents in this Ozark Trail 10-Person tent at all. Apart from the roof though, there’s not a lot of mesh from the 5 windows and the door, because they’re not very big. Because there’s only 1 door in the entire tent, only 1 “room” will have the door, and the other “room” will only have windows.

However, my Ozark Trail Tent’s fabric started getting pretty soaked after just that 15 minutes of mostly light to moderate rain. I’ve camped in lots of Coleman tents over the past few years, and even an Ozark Trail Cabin 10-Person tent, and here are my thoughts on both brands. Here you have this Ozark Trail 12 tent side by side with two other tents with the same declared capacity and built in a similar style. So all are cabin type tents with a minimal fly and freestanding. Regarding the size, obviously this is a huge tent, but the declared capacity is no less than 12 people. Now, the tent’s dimensions are 20 x 18 ft (610 x 549 cm), but this is just the ground needed for the tent.

I have slept in this tent and another one that is about 13 x 10 ft without no issues. The tent and my friends including myself went through 20F nights, 50 mph winds, and summer/winter storms without no issues besides the cold. It does block off the wind and prevents moisture from coming in very well. I rather spend 1/5th than what I really have to pay to get the same results. I think this would be best suited for families with little camping experience. It is good for perfect conditions and it is not very good on hills or non-flat areas.

During those five minutes of rain, he was a little more stressed as the risk of a wet sleeping bag had not been completely mitigated and he rushed back to the campground. True, I wasn’t able to remove the rain fly to watch the stars ozark trail canopy or let the wind ventilate my tent, but I was able to enjoy the day hikes without any sort of worry. In essence, I had committed to the permanent rainfly option by default and there was a certain contentedness that came with that.

The weight of this Ozark Trail is lighter than most of the same size alternative steel frame canopy tents, coming in right about 29 lbs. An argument can be made as to whether this is good or bad. From a positive perspective, the lightweight design increases portability which is certainly important in carrying the tent to its intended location. From a negative perspective, the weight is indicative of a lack of high quality material and components used throughout the shelter. The included carrying bag does not have wheels to aid in transportation, but at only 29 lbs.

This tent is heavy (near 50 lbs), but for all of its size, it’s not that bad. You might be wondering what’s it like to set up this tent. The final tent I’ll review today is Ozark Trail’s largest – their 14 person, 4-room tent. Ft. of space, all split into three distinct, equal-sized rooms, all of which can fit queen-sized air beds.
