The silver had one significant dent in it on the right top edge – a slight pucker outward on the side and inward on the top of the shank. I was also very tarnished, a blue black in colour making it hard to read the hallmarks. Moving to the rim I was pleased to see that it had been well cared for.
The unsung hero of the true System stem, Peterson’s graduated bore mouthpiece tapers from a 5mm opening at the tenon to 1.5mm at the P-Lip button. Without this invisible, yet critical, feature, the System drilling simply wouldn’t work as proficiently. He scrubbed the exterior of the bowl with Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush to remove the grime and grit on the briar and the lava on the rim top. The finish looks very good with great looking grain around the bowl and shank. Jeff soaked the stem in Before & After Deoxidizer to remove the oxidation on the rubber. When the pipe arrived here in Vancouver for the second stop of its restoration tour I was amazed it looked so good. I took some close up photos of the rim top and also of the stem surface. I wanted to show what an amazing job Jeff did in the cleanup of the rim top.
The inner and the outer edge of the rim were both undamaged. The back edge of the rim had a build up on it that was not too thick and would quite easily be remedied. To some people the cleaning of system pipes can appear to be problematic,in fact they are in mostcases easy to clean. A pipe cleaner dipped in alcohol will do a fine job of removing any driedtobacco juices in the mouthpiece or shank.
I like the Hallmark feature on the higher end Peterson pipes with Sterling silver bands. …With that information in hand I knew what I was dealing with in terms of the stamping on the pipe. As a long time smoker of Peterson pipes I have found them totally dependable as basic smoking instruments. I am willing to concede that we are all different in our tastes and choices, mine possibly being an extreme viewpoint of the Peterson brand. However in defence, my knowledge is based on years of ownership and experience of the myriad selection of pipes that Peterson have produced and are still producing. I have had an extensive collection of other brands, including artisan pipes, in my collections over the years, with which to draw these comparisons.
I am confident that the future looks bright for the modern Peterson era of pipe manufacture. Since Tom Palmer took over the business in 1990 he has continued to create a much more efficient production cycle of the pipes being manufactured at their premises in Dublin. His emphasis has been very much on employing good skilled staff and quality traditional methods.
