Having had the opportunity to see the pipe ‘in the flesh’, I am amazed at the quality, feel, looks and the smoking performance. Normally with the newer unsmoked high grades that come into my collection, they remain un smoked. However I made an exception with this beauty and boy it was worth it.
The Peterson brand was embraced by politicians, business leaders, sportsmen, artists and writers. Generally when pipe smokers get together and discuss the system pipes they are divided as towhether they like or dislike them,in particular the P lip stem which has many detractors. Of course smallerpipes are more problematic than peterson pipes the larger ones,coupled to the stem shape being more angular infull bent examples. I have never really found this to be too much of a problem as I will use thesmaller finer pipe cleaners such as those made by Falcon,which seem to pass easily. A bright metal band serves as a nice accent, and the stems are made of comfortable black vulcanite. If you’re looking for a traditional Peterson, you can’t do better than an Aran. Flying in the face of the condemnation of smoking on health grounds, the pipe appears to be going through a gradual upturn in popularity.
The shop has seen a lot of history, it was located just around the corner from the end of Grafton St. on Nassau St.one side of which is the campus of Trinity College. As I have stated previously, the huge World-wide number of contented Peterson pipe smokers is evidence enough and must be considered a great endorsement of the brand. Recently I acquired a wonderful and very unique Peterson pipe. The pipe was in need of some restoration, as its original stem was missing.
He scrubbed the exterior of the bowl with Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush to remove the grime and grit on the briar and the lava on the rim top. The finish looks very good with great looking grain around the bowl and shank. Jeff soaked the stem in Before & After Deoxidizer to remove the oxidation on the rubber. When the pipe arrived here in Vancouver for the second stop of its restoration tour I was amazed it looked so good. I took some close up photos of the rim top and also of the stem surface. I wanted to show what an amazing job Jeff did in the cleanup of the rim top.
The history of these pipes indeed goes back to a long time ago, the firm “Kapp & Peterson” being one of the oldest pipe manufacture still producing. Smokers like the Peterson quality and some only swear by Peterson pipes. Among all the Peterson pipes, we chose to present you here the Army collection. As the name suggests, each Peterson Army pipe has an “Army” or “Military” tenon, and the shank is strengthened thanks to a band. Depending on the models, you will find nickel or silver bands. In any case, these are robust pipes because the mortise is strengthened by this band.
