Honeywell HEPA Portable Air Purifiers

For optimal cleaning performance, replace your HEPA filter every 12 months. The filter check/reset light on the HPA200 Air Purifier will remind you when it’s time to change your filter. The huge and exceptionally powerful Medify MA-112 is surprisingly easy on the ears, registering as “quiet” on its low, low-medium, and high-medium speeds (39, 42, and 47 decibels). But at 28 inches tall and 15 inches wide, it’s best suited to large commercial or public spaces—like casinos, which Medify says use the MA-112 to counter the effects of cigarette smoke. The AirSoap uses washable, electrically charged plates to capture airborne particulates. In addition to the following models, we have reviewed and dismissed hundreds of purifiers since 2013 based on their specs, features (or lack thereof), livability, and price.

Accessibility meets efficiency with the latest iteration in a series of revolutionary Honeywell Air Purifiers. Honeywell InSight HEPA Air Purifiers provide visual enhancement via a new display panel that will illuminate when active. Select between four cleaning settings (Microscopic Particles, General Clean, Pollen and Turbo). Once you’ve chosen a cleaning level, the InSight HEPA Air Cleaner will illuminate that setting so that you know exactly how your portable air purifier is performing.

Smaller purifiers tend to be less energy-efficient, but the Clorox is an exception, with lower long-term running costs than is typical for this size. A display shutoff and child lock on the controls make it easier to sleep near and suitable for nurseries and playrooms. A slightly pricier version of it is Alexa-enabled for remote or voice operation. Despite the name, this is strictly a small-room purifier, and in larger spaces, it doesn’t keep pace with our other picks. According to the EPA, air pollution inside the home can be two to five times higher than outside.

After three months, the impregnated carbon, which is solely responsible for the odor and smoke removal, will have absorbed as much as it can. Simply put, the activated carbon cannot hold any additional smoke or odors after three months or so. I wanted to test the air purifier on kitchen odors, and I thought that’d be the best way to start this Honeywell air purifier review. So once I removed the plastic and installed the filters, I placed it in my dining room, which has an open floor plan with the kitchen. I also tried it around the corner in the living room, but didn’t notice any difference because of the open floor plan.

To replace the HEPA filter, wrap the pre-filter around the stackable drums (number of drums varies based on model).Lastly, reinstall the filter assembly, replace the end-cap, and insert locking mechanism, turning it clockwise. Finally, discard the used filter and plug the unit back into the power source to resume receiving clean, fresh air. I was also pleasantly surprised by how quiet this best air purifier is. Even on its highest setting, it’s no louder than my tower fan or furnace. The sound is also smooth and consistent, so it blends into the background.

On its four lower speeds, it measured a barely noticeable 41 decibels or less. A handful of air purifiers rely entirely on ozone to purify the air. We set four ACH as the minimum for a purifier to be considered adequate for each room size.

If this is the first time you’re using a Honeywell Portable Air Purifier, you’ll want to ensure that you have removed the protective plastic wrap from the air cleaner’s filters. The noise may also be an indicator that it’s time to replace the air purifier’s filter. Room air purifiers can often run loud when their filters contain high amounts of airborne particles. This can block the pores in a filter and stop the air from passing through efficiently.

The PowerPlus is also easy to maintain and includes an indicator light that tells you when to replace the widely available filters. In the North American definition, “true HEPA” means that a filter removes at least 99.97% of airborne particles of a 0.3-micron diameter in a single pass. For reference, human hair usually measures between 20 and 180 microns across. A particle with a 0.3-micron diameter is the toughest size to remove via physical, HEPA-type filtration.

Doing all this may damage the fan’s motor, and we wouldn’t consider it to be a long-term solution for air-quality issues. But if you experience an air-quality emergency—say, regional wildfires creating a purifier supply shortage—it’s worth a shot. On that setting, the Air Pro emitted an earsplitting 71 decibels, measured from a distance of 6 feet. That’s by far the loudest of any purifier we’ve tested, and it would be absolutely unlivable in real-world use. I could hear its jet-like whine from 40 feet away, and it was on the other side of a heavy, acoustically sealed door. For reference, we set the limit of comfort at 50 decibels, and humans perceive a 10-decibel increase as roughly a doubling of loudness.

You can place your Honeywell HEPA air purifier in any space where you need fresh, clean air. For example, you can use it in the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, basement, honeywell purifier or family room. Be sure to place your air purifier in a space that falls within the air purifier’s specified coverage area for optimal performance.
