Many of today’s air purifiers feature an Auto mode that adjusts the fan speed based on the air quality. Though it’s Energy Star-certified, the Honeywell HPA300 True HEPA Air Purifier doesn’t have an Auto mode and had high power consumption in our tests. Despite its negatives and costs, we strongly recommend the Honeywell PowerPlus True HEPA Air Purifier because it can effectively and efficiently remove particulate matter and VOCs from the air. It has minimal maintenance needs, and the filters are widely available. I have tried dozens of air purifiers, and this is the one I use in my home. To test air purifiers, I light an incense stick in a 200-square-foot room, burn it for 15 minutes, and then turn the purifier on and run it on high for two hours.
Whole-house air purifiers are a more advanced or complete solution than standard replacement furnace filters. Our air cleaners work efficiently to capture more airborne particles from the air passing through the filter. They require minimal maintenance, with no replacement honeywell humidifier filters required. The Mila air purifier is a notable entrant in the nascent category of truly smart air purifiers. Using bunches of incense sticks, we created a thick haze of smoke in the room—which was four times larger than what the Coway is designed to be used in. It still dropped the pollution by 70% in under an hour, performing as well as some purifiers intended for extra-large spaces. The Coway Airmega 200M is virtually identical to Coway’s Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty in every important respect. They’re equivalent in noise and performance measurements, their filters are interchangeable, and their similar controls allow you to shut off the display lights.
Consider whether you actually need a large-space purifier, though. If you’d be using a Blue Pure 211+ to purify a space that these smaller machines could handle, that’s wasted electricity. The filters have a shorter replacement cycle than those of the Mighty, and many of our other picks, at six to nine months depending on usage honeywell purifier (versus, typically, a year). The machine measures actual filter usage, not simply the elapsed time since the last filter was installed, so if you don’t run your machine all the time, you’ll get more life out of them. In the long term, though, filter replacements will likely give the 311i Max slightly higher running costs.
