A generation of people came to believe that bicycles were inherently heavy, dangerous and unreliable. Marc Muller, a young new Schwinn engineer, was given the responsibility to head up the project. The Paramount operations were moved to Waterford, Wisconsin, where the Paramount was reborn with a modern factory and workforce. Schwinn then partnered with 7-Eleven, establishing a team including Eric Heiden. When 7-Eleven decided to hit the big time in racing, Schwinn went its own way due to a lack of funding. Schwinn was, however, able to recruit an up-and- coming rider named Lance Armstrong to its ranks.
After the bike-boom of the early 1970’s, Paramount was in a poor state of affairs in regards to competition and advancing technologies. In 1979, Edward R. Schwinn Jr. was made president of the company and promptly closed down all of the Paramount operations until they could be brought up to date. They also manufactured their own rims in the Chicago factory, the “Schwinn Tubular Rim”. These rims, like the Chicago frames, were among the sturdiest ever built. The parts that say “Schwinn” were made by Schwinn in their enormous Chicago factory (which I had the pleasure of touring in the early ’70’s). Parts that say “Schwinn Approved” were made elsewhere to Schwinn’s specifications.

It’s hard to think of other markets where the premium is as large as it is in the high end bike industry. There are hallmarks of bike appeal (say, fat tires, or suspension), which will attract buyers. If those features are poorly engineered and manufactured, they lower the overall value of the bike. Companies like Oculus and Tesla have wisely chosen the opposite strategy, producing a premium product that gives the best possible experience.
They understand that you don’t get a second chance at a first impression. They know that it’s easier to start with a prestigious product and move downmarket than vice-versa. The Owner of the bike store (who sponcered the race) made sure we crossed the line before he and his buddies went home.
By the mid-1970s, competition from lightweight and feature-rich imported bikes was making strong inroads in the budget-priced and beginners’ market. While Schwinn’s popular lines were far more durable than the budget bikes, they were also far heavier and more expensive, and parents were realizing schwinn dealers that most of the budget bikes would outlast most kids’ interest in bicycling. He’s pretty savvy for buying up old brands like Motobecane and Mercier and branding them on bikes. The quality of them aren’t great, but they’re stll a step up from Wal-Mart, and other department store bikes.
It means that any bicycle more than 50 years old in a good or fair condition is likely to attract interest from other buyers. It also means that old Schwinn bikes before 1975 will be schwinn beach cruiser of greater value to collectors than a newer bike. Similarly, if the bike is scarce, such as the 1934 triplet or the Aerocycle, it may be priced in the thousands of dollars on eBay.
