James River Outfitters: Floating, Tent Camping, RV Park near Branson, MO

Again, the right size for you depends on how you pack your cooler and how long you need to keep things cold (more ice takes up more volume). Generally, the more expensive the cooler, the better it insulates, the better the foam. The exterior of the cooler is made of a durable, thickly coated nylon—waterproof and tough. The wheels are a single-construction plastic and not hollow or feeble-feeling as on so many other coolers. Remarkably, when we lifted this cooler—fully loaded with cans, food, and many pounds of ice—by the handle, the experience didn’t feel that different from wheeling around a high-end piece of luggage. These dry bag coolers did great in our submersion tests, and they float, making these a great option to take along on the kayak.

Advocate and Zoomer Members can participate in Bring-a-Friend FREE Days presented by Community First Health Plans on designated days in 2024. To be fair, we could say this about most any roto-molded cooler with bear-resistant certification. The Outfitter’s trick is its minimal exterior, which leaves very little purchase or edge to catch on if the cooler takes a fall.

Our sister site Alloutdoor.com recently reviewed a hiking backpack sold by Ozark Trail that had an overall stellar performance and it triggered a question among our staff. Is Walmart’s Ozark Trail brand a true sleeper, putting out products that ozark trail canopy deserve much more attention among outdoorsmen? With that question being floated, we decided to travel down the path of discovery and start to take a closer look at Ozark Trail and some of their products. We just completed a review of the Ozark Trail Tumbler line, which is not only budget friendly but also well performing.

The Yeti Hopper Backflip 24 was the first backpack-style cooler that we tested, and although its overall performance wasn’t stellar, there were things I did like. Whether you are trekking gear to the beachfront or headed out for a hiking day, having free hands is always a bonus. The backpack has lots of straps and hitching points, too — I imagine the target demographic is more hiking-oriented than day-at-the-beach, but in either case, you’ll be able to secure extra stuff. The Rovr Rollr wheeled cooler fared much better, thanks to a rugged design that features heavy-duty wheels, a sturdy steel handlebar and an optional $50 accessory that lets you tow it behind your bike. My only qualm is that the T-shaped handlebar includes comfy rubber grips on the sides, but not in the middle, the spot you’ll want to hold as you lug it around one-handed.

Meanwhile, the IceMule Jaunt 15 was our favorite adventure pack of the ones we tested. While the straps are not as comfortable as other coolers, they are adjustable, and you can carry the shoulder straps or dry bag rollover top, too. The RTIC Backpack 30 is another favorite for sheer carrying comfort. It features padded carry handles and a comfy over-the-shoulder sling.

Depending on the amount of perishables you plan to take with you and how far you’re going, you may have already put some limitations on your adventures. Without considering overall capacity, the most portable coolers will be more comfortable to carry for longer distances. The most inexpensive cooler we recommend is the Lifewit Large Insulated 24.

REI had a member sale over Memorial Day weekend and we were able to save 20% on our cooler. We still spent more money than I’d like but at least we saved 20%. Just as with the other cooler test, we purchased four bags of ice and put the Coleman and YETI Tundra 65 in a head-to-head test. We are committed to finding, researching, and recommending the best products.
