Which size you need really comes down to what all you plan to have in your pack. A frame is important because it will keep your back from getting sore by distributing the weight along your spine and hips, rather than on your shoulders. A frameless bag with only a few pounds of gear might feel heavier than an internal frame backpack loaded with up to 30 pounds. For most people, I recommend choosing a backpack with an internal frame, unless you need the portability and flexibility of a frameless. Before purchasing this pack I used a more traditionally styled, and heavier, backpack for daily walks. Now he’s 12 and carries almost the same weight as I do and loves to help me plan trips with 10-mile days. This pack fits me fine and is very comfortable for lightweight loads. It’s light enough that I don’t mind putting it in my backpack and it takes up almost no space at all. And on summit day, I sure am glad I have a daypack!
