Children and adults alike enjoy a hay or sleigh ride. Your wagon rides take you on a tour of the woods and fields around the Farm Center, giving you views of nature and water. Dogs are allowed on the trails, but must be on a 6-foot kent road bike leash at all times. The Debug EZ Roller Floating Surf Wheelchair allows visitors to enjoy dipping your toes in the sand and feeling the spray of the surf. This wheelchair is a breeze to move across the sand directly into the water.
The trail connects a park-and-ride area with the multimodal paved trail for tourists and residents with 11 beach access points. During peak summer visitation, the 2.7 miles between the East Shore Trail parking lot and Sand Harbor often sees standstill traffic, turning a 5-mile drive into a long commute. By bike, the trip takes 14 minutes, and no parking spot is required. The new Active Transportation plan proposes adding Class 1 trails, like the East Shore Trail that connects Incline Village to Sand Harbor by way of a bike, scooter and pedestrian-only pathway, around nearly the entire lake.
If I had to guess I would say, maybe 70% of the people at Unbound are just trying to get to the finish with a time that they are proud of. Maybe 20-30% consider themselves diehard racers at the pointy end. This genre is supposed to be this new space where everybody’s invited, everybody’s welcome, and it’s supposed to be inclusive.
On our ride in August, when we had bought those pink cruiser bikes, someone’s pedal ripped out of the crank – it stripped and just fell right out of the crank, only a few miles in. We made it on that day – maybe we rode for three hours, and we had a good time and one of the bikes failed out of six. But you don’t know if you go twice that distance how many other parts are within an inch of death. The plan was released in March 2024 and was approved unanimously by the governing body on April 24, 2024. Suggested parking is the van accessible parking spaces and utilizing the accessible walkways on the side. Kensington Metropark has one Floating Beech Wheelchair available to rent for free, allowing visitors the ability to enjoy the sand and water at Martindale Beach. The chair is available to rent during summer from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. Please note, a companion or attendant is required as Metroparks staff will not be able to assist with transfers or pushing the wheelchair on the beach or in the water. Kensington Metropark offers 4,481 acres of wooded, hilly terrain surrounding beautiful Kent Lake and is home to an abundance of wildlife and waterfowl.
Occasionally woodland trails may be blocked with debris such as fallen tree limbs. Nature trails are not cleared or salted in the winter and may be snow-covered, slippery or muddy. Customers have mixed opinions about the quality of the bicycle. Some say it’s a solid bike for someone starting out on their first road bike, and the breaks are kind of ok. However, others say that the breaks suck, the bike fell apart after the first ride, and had an issue with a damaged part. They say it rides well, shifts smoothly, and performs wonderfully.
Playground features include climbing structures, slides, spinners and transfer stations. Equipment is on engineered wood fiber (wood mulch) safety surfacing. That’ s probably where gravel came from, and probably where mountain biking came from, and we will get a new wave of inspiration if that happens. But I don’t know if that’s a one year thing or a 20 year thing. But I was also, at that moment, sitting with a bunch of people who may or may not have had heatstroke, and were fighting their personal demons and thinking about whether or not they would continue or make the time cut. And I don’t know that they feel represented in the dialogue of Unbound, even though they are the majority of Unbound.
