Some of the bikes sold at these stores aren’t suitable for upgrade. There are bikes I didn’t like, but I haven’t seen any that couldn’t be salvaged if given enough resources. The Pacific Evolution is a bike that was so far below hyper mountain bike my limited expectations that I still don’t think it’s worthy of any effort. But on a mountain bike, weight can really drag down the enjoyment. And I’ve come to appreciate the role they play in getting people into cycling.

The biggest problem I’ve seen is improper assembly and setup. Even a big-name bike can give a miserable experience if it isn’t set up properly. And sadly, this is an area in which most big-box stores are lacking. I weigh 190lbs and on a straight road, I get up to 19mph which is way faster then what I need. I go so many places on this bike that I would have never gone to if I had to do all the peddling. I can move thru the orange groves around here so much easier then before.
