I am what is politely known as a “budget conscious” person. Shipping took a little over a week, but soon enough the UPS truck was at my door and unloading my first ever e-bike. Attach the quick release front wheel, handlebars, and seat, then plug in the battery to get it charged up. The next morning, all was in readiness, so I set off for my first Schwinn e-bike ride. Class 1It’s important to remember that not all e-bikes are created equal. Some e-bikes are classified as “Class 1” bikes where the electric motor only provides assistance to the rider when they pedal. Everything after that comes from the power in the rider’s legs.These bikes are allowed wherever bikes are permitted. Of course, some of that weight is in the 288-watt battery which Schwinn adversities as being good for up to 35 miles of range. We’ll get into the range in a moment, but the rest of the bike is fairly standard fare for any bike. You get a 7-speed gear system on the rear wheel with a single gear on the front.

When you want to stop, just squeeze the brake levers and the motor cuts off. When I finally started riding, I discovered that I couldn’t be completely lazy. You can’t just sit on the bike and have it zoom you around town — you actually have to pedal to engage the electric motor. This plants it in the territory of pedal-assisted e-bikes rather than full-on motor-assisted. But, another thing to consider is that the Shimano Nexus 8 with Roller Brake retails for around $250 alone – so if you want one, this one comes with a whole 700C based electric bike attached! Throw a better battery and a better controller on it, and I bet you can get a whole lot more than 250W out of the motor as well.

Once removed from the box, the remaining tasks can be completed by one person. It takes several minutes to remove the protective packing materials from the bike and all its parts, and the majority of the remaining assembly is relatively standard. The printed directions are detailed and easy to follow, and all of the tools and hardware needed are included. After attaching the front and rear stabilizers, pedals, handlebar and handlebar post, and the seat and seat post, features like the device holder and bottle holders/hand weight holders also need to be installed. On my long rides on a hybrid bike, I averaged 15 mph but once I got going, I realized 20 mph isn’t a big deal. Similar to how you can change gears on a multi-speed bike, you can choose how much the motor assists you, too. If you’re having trouble going up a hill, just increase the assistance to maintain your speed. There is a schwinn ebike company called Rechargeable Power Energy (RPE) that can repack and restore your original battery. I have heard good things about them, that they perform this service for mainstream ebike manufacturers and double check the circuits when performing a restore or upgrade. They are located in Nevada and can mail back and forth.

A higher level of assistance requires less pedaling effort. The Coston and Marshall include an integrated light, which are powered by the main battery, just like the motor. The Coston models have fully integrated head, tail and battery lights; while the Marshall model’s taillight is battery operated and must be turned on separately. While it could use a little boost to a 500 watt motor to help on the hills, the smaller motor keeps the price lower.
