Schwinn Bicycles on Paper

The Schwinn brand joins other brands already owned by Pon Holdings that including Gazelle, Cervélo, FOCUS, Santa Cruz, Kalkhoff, and Faraday. When was the last time you spent an afternoon riding a Schwinn bicycle, sipping from a custom sports bottle, and waving to your neighbors with the wind blowing through your hair? I’m guessing, for most of our readers, not recently, although I know my coworker Acree happens to be an avid cyclist. Having managed two bicycle factories and worked in a number of bicycle shops, Schwinn’s experience came during one of the biggest evolutionary periods in bicycle technology.

A growing number of US teens and young adults were purchasing imported European sport racing or sport touring bicycles, many fitted with multiple derailleur-shifted gears. Schwinn decided to meet the challenge by developing two lines of sport or road ‘racer’ bicycles. One was already in the catalog — the limited production Paramount series. The Paramount series had limited production numbers, making vintage examples quite rare today.

Frank V. Schwinn had to decide whether hiscompany should continue a “Made in America” tradition that had served it well forseveral decades. Despite all of these problems, Schwinnwas still a major force in the bicycle industry in the USA throughout thedecade. He began emphasizing marketing and financing at theexpense of modernizing the factory. He felt most comfortable in finance andsales but now had to run the whole company. This approach had some success inthe beginning but over time it began to take its toll on Schwinn. In 2021, a new chapter begins with the sale of the Schwinn brand to Pon Holdings, a manufacturer of high-quality bicycles. Pon Holdings emphasize that one major reason for its purchase of Dorel Sports was that Schwinn is one of the major known brands of bicycles in the USA. The fate of the Schwinn brand is still unknown, but being part of a larger company with deep pockets may lead to innovation and perhaps even to upgrading their offered bicycles. To accomplish this, in the mid-1980s Schwinnpurchased a one-third share of a China Bicycles factory in Hong Kong (Crown andColeman 1996).

In 1895, Schwinn was driven by the pursuit of an American dream when bicycling was still a relatively new sport. As one of the longest-standing bicycle companies, Schwinn signified influence and innovation amidst a biking craze that further catapulted its success. TheNetherlands is one of the leading bicycling countries in the world. Only time will tell whetheror not the iconic Schwinn brand is in good hands. In October2021, Pon Holdings of the Netherlands approved the purchase of the brandsSchwinn, Cannondale, GT, and Mongoose from Dorel Industries for $810 million.

[Ignaz Schwinn] was born in Hardheim, Baden, Germany, in 1860 and worked on two-wheeled ancestors of the modern bicycle that appeared in 19th century Europe. In 1895, with the financial backing of fellow German American Adolph Frederick William Arnold (a meat packer), he founded Arnold, Schwinn & Company. Schwinn’s new company coincided with a sudden bicycle craze in America. Chicago became the center of the American bicycle industry, with thirty factories turning out thousands of bikes every day. Bicycle output in the United States grew to over a million units per year by the turn of the 20th century.

Schwinn needed a consultative partner with a strong, technical background in e-commerce and digital marketing to provide strategic guidance, user research, and creative design to revamp and launch a new, customer-focused website. F. Goodrich bicycles, sold in tire stores, Schwinn eliminated the practice of producing private label bicycles in 1950, insisting that the Schwinn brand and guarantee appear on all products. In exchange for ensuring the schwinn bicycles presence of the Schwinn name, distributors retained the right to distribute Schwinn bikes to any hardware store, toy store, or bicycle shop that ordered them. W. Schwinn tasked a new team to plan future business strategy, consisting of marketing supervisor Ray Burch, general manager Bill Stoeffhaas, and design supervisor Al Fritz. By 1990, other United States bicycle companies with reputations for excellence in design such as Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale had cut further into Schwinn’s market.

The decade started with an emphasis on motorcycles and ended with Schwinn firmly established as the highest quality bicycle maker for both adults and children. The innovations of the 1930s, such as the balloon-tired children’s bikes, front suspension, front drum-style brakes, and the Paramount Racer set the direction for  Schwinn to next several decades. The publication in 1895 coincides with the same year Schwinn was founded by Adolph Arnold and Ignaz Schwinn. This publication with the name Famous Schwinn Built-Bicycles very likely was marketing the original bicycles sold by the new bicycle company founded by the two founders.
