Since not all kits include a battery, you might find yourself browsing through options and landing on something at an unbelievable price. If that’s the schwinn dealers case, double check it’s got the battery included. If not, then it is possible to source the battery yourself, but be sure about what you are getting.
If you like the idea of a mid-drive system and you want it to have torque-sensing pedal assist then you’ve got a few choices. For some people, it’s no big deal to take apart a bottom bracket, but for others, it’s a slightly more intimidating prospect. There is a slick-looking 250-watt motor with a single battery in the base kit. If the 10-mile range of the base unit feels a little constricting, another battery can be added to double the range. With a 2750 RPM motor the results show a top speed of 22.51 MPH with an 80 tooth rear sprocket. This speed is higher than Currie electric scooters with 650 Watt motors, they are geared to go around 15 MPH. In that case I recommend switching over to a gear motor to provide the proper gear ratio. But, these two areas are where the S1 delivers plenty of promise. In regards to battery life and range, once again the Coston DX falls behind the pack. Some similarly priced e-bikes like the Juiced RipCurrent S, for example, have ranges upward of 70 miles on a single charge. The Coston DX claims to have a range of up to only 45 miles, but in my experience it was actually well short of this. Available in both step-through and traditional layouts and intended to suit riders within a general height range of 5-foot-4 and 6-foot-4, the Coston seems to be largely geared toward families.
For Prime Day 2022, the company has put a few of its e-bikes on sale, making it a little easier to pick up one and start taking some easy, pedal-assisted rides. Make no mistake, even with the deals, these bikes are still a serious investment. That said, if you look at the options on our best electric bikes list, you’ll see that these cost more than a great e-bike normally would.
