A Life of Gratitude Beth Reed

Shopping for an e-bike that retails for less than $1000 can be a mixed bag. We understand people wanting to stretch a dollar as far as possible, especially with inflation being what it is. However, there’s a point of diminishing returns where the sacrifices made to reach the low price have eroded the e-bike’s quality to a point we don’t feel good recommending.

The G4 family of GoCycles is the fourth iteration of the British fast folder. Not only does this bike have more carbon and a more integrated cockpit than its predecessor, GoCycle managed to double the torque produced by the front hub motor. Don’t let this bike’s small stature fool you; it’s remarkably quick and climbs hills with the best of them. The new G4i+ also has predictive electric shifting and a set of very nice hydraulic disk brakes that are unbranded but bear a striking resemblance to a high-end Magura design.

We don’t often see Class 3 e-bikes that are unquestionably affordable, and even with the powerful Shengyi motor, the bike is spec’d with quality parts. For those riders who prefer a step-through or low-rise frame, Marin now makes a version of the Fairfax 1 called the Fairfax 1 ST; it’s identical to the Fairfax, apart from having a lower top tube. When we first schwinn ebike compiled this guide, in 2017, we started with a master list of 45 bikes and filtered it down to 16 using the above requirements. For our next update, in 2019, we started with those 16 bikes, checking to see which aspects and components had changed and which had remained the same. When necessary, we called in models that had undergone any substantial changes.

“We are thrilled to team up with Schwinn, the creator of America’s most iconic bicycles,” says John Jacobs, co-founder and chief creative optimist (CCO) of Life is Good. We are more in the customization, the selection, comfort side. If you want the nostalgia and the look, more simple, reminds you of the classic, timeless 50s style, I’d say go with the Schwinn for the $150 price point. With that said, the other thing with Sixthreezero is we really focus on seats and comfort. So I think, personally, you’re gonna find our seats to be more comfortable than Schwinn seats.

The 33.5 lb weight is a tad high for a performance road bike, but it’s a featherweight compared to most e-bikes. So with a small amount of assist, delivered beautifully from the Fazua motor I might add, you actually see modest speed increases that offset the weight of the bike and then some. Its 500W brushless hub motor is surprisingly powerful and does a great job of delivering a rider up to 20 mph either with pedal assist or throttle.

We tested the brand’s model X last year and it impressed us with its high quality. All Electric Bike Company models are assembled in the U.S., and the attention to detail is immediately evident. Unlike the Model X, this one is sleeker, with an integrated battery. But like that one, it’s fully customizable and built to order with your options. There’s a 7-speed Shimano Tourney drivetrain and five levels of e-assist, giving you various pedaling options.

I have very steep hills all around my neighborhood. I’m talking Twin Peaks in San Francisco and riding the rim of Lake Tahoe. It has a nice twist throttle to make schwinn beach cruiser starts easy and variable power settings so it isn’t always all power all the time. On flat terrain it isn’t necessary to use power as it has a 7 speed Shimano.

Interest does not accrue during the period of the plan. There is no administration fee charged for entering into a special payments plan. Each month during an equal payments plan you are required to pay in full by the due date that month’s equal payments plan instalment. Any unpaid portion not received by the due date will no longer form part of the equal payments plan and interest will accrue on that amount from the day after the date of your next statement at the applicable regular annual rate. Shipping Fees are calculated based on your shipping address, and the size and weight of the item or items being shipped. Any package that exceeds the threshold value for weight OR length, width and height is considered ‘Heavy/Oversized’, and requires a scheduled delivery.

The Coda S2 comes with well-rated Vittoria Randonneur tires—that is, tires from a “real” tire company that you can buy in a bike shop, and now in a wider and cushier size—and steel-wrapped resin pedals. In 2018, the Coda Sport (as it used to be called) cost $530; now, the Coda S2, which has very similar components, costs $770. This relatively affordable seven-speed model from Aventon delivers simplicity and style that is tough to beat. Simply push the throttle to get started and the brushless hub motor kicks in, assisting you more gently as you start pedaling. The battery is hidden in the bike’s frame, a surprising feature compared to the bolt-on vibe of many bikes in this price range. Best for smoother roads and bike paths, the Soltera delivers the most essential features a city rider needs in a strikingly light 41-pound package.
