As opposed to the Marshall Hi-Ten steel fork with 100mm of travel, the Coston CE has a 27.5” steel suspension fork with 63mm of travel. The JAK 7 mechanical disc brakes with 180mm front rotor and 160mm rear rotor. The Coston DX does have a flat-out great lighting system, with a bright headlight, taillight, and running light beneath the central frame that provides solid surrounding visibility. It also has a hidden pocket in the seat, which is a pretty neat way to store your phone, keys, and other small items. That being said, the more you ride the Coston, the more it feels less sturdy than you first thought.
Never before has an electric bike been as easy to use as one of the four Schwinn electric bikes. These step-through frames are as comfortable as ever, with a host of features to make your first-ever e-bike ride as smooth as possible. The Schwinn Coston DX is a Class 2 e-bike, which means that it has a throttle that is capable of reaching up to 20 mph without pedaling. Its motor is hub-mounted, and it has a 360-watt-hour battery. I mostly used the motor in pedal-assist mode, though I will cover the throttle in the next section. The motor on this bike is very aggressive in that is starts up quickly with even the slightest movement of the pedal, and it goes hard.
Got this bike after researching and talking to my neighbor who has over 4000 trouble free miles on his so far this year. After assembly, I have been pleased with the way it rides and makes pedaling easier and more fun. The 250 watt motor could be bigger for this bike to use the throttle regularly schwinn mountain bike and give a better boost on hills. Most ebikes just have a big battery hanging off the bottom tube. Turning takes a little bit to get used to as it is a little more top-heavy than a regular bike with the battery. The Marshall looks like a mountain bike with a comfy cruiser feel to it.
Even at level 3 assistance, my pedals are free spinning in 7th gear. The only time you’ll ever need to balance power output would be if you were planning on doing an entire 20 miles without charging. For commuters and people who run errands, that’s not always going to be the case. At level 5, the throttle propels you up to 20 miles per hour and disengages if you go faster than that (for example, if you go downhill).
It’s good because everything on the bike feels solid and borderline rugged. The downside is this bike feels about as heavy as a light-armored vehicle. The bike tops out at around 57 pounds, which is tank-like in the biking world. By comparison, my poor, neglected Trek bike weighs around 25 pounds. That’s a big difference when you’re picking up the bike to turn it around or put it on a car rack.
Without knobby tires, the Marshall isn’t going too far into mud or snow, but it is great for easier trails and dirt roads. My testing has been done on gravel roads and wet, muddy trails at around 5° C with a bit of snow on the ground. The balance with the the battery takes a bit to get used to but then it’s all fun anywhere you go. On slow steep hills or trails a lower gear with a bit of assist keeps you moving. The lowest gear is a nice big ring in the back for helping on those hills. Instead of a front suspension, the Coston DX has a 27.5” Alloy rigid fork, creating a stiffer ride but with better speed and power transfer.
Healy Ridge’s 250W motor and 280Wh battery offer a range of 25 miles, and the maximum speed on this bike can reach 20mph. Now, the Healy Ridge bikes are not what we’re used to seeing when it comes to electric mountain bikes, but they are perfect for beginners. This creates a more seamless look and functionality with both the front and rear lights. There are no fenders or a rear rack on the Marshall, which is one of the biggest differences between this Schwinn electric bike and the Schwinn Coston electric bike. Nothing feels cheap, plastic-y, or vulnerable to quick failure. You also get two different frame sizes to choose from, which is a big upgrade over the single one-size-fits-all frames that many e-bike companies still offer.
