The Original is made with an exterior of 840-denier UV-resistant nylon wrapped around open-cell foam. Technically less insulating than closed-cell foam, open-cell foam performs fairly well for most applications as long as the cooler isn’t left in the open sun. The Original can do exactly what you need it to do, which is to keep things cold for the day while you focus on the fun at hand.
Though it doesn’t have wheels on it, the Igloo MaxCold Cooler offers notably better performance for the same price, and while I haven’t tested them just yet, there are wheeled versions available, too. But if you’re willing to settle for middle-of-the-road performance (and if you want to navigate that road without any heavy lifting), then Coleman’s cooler is a justifiable pick.
Also, if you are needing a simple solution for an afternoon picnic (ice life of just a few hours) or a more long-term solution that will keep your items chilled for several days, Coleman has you covered. Remember, storage volume that you can’t use is just extra weight and storage consideration you’ll have to deal with! And don’t think that just because Coleman makes an extra-large cooler and also a personal cooler that they approach both in the same manner.
