Weber® Grills® Traveler Stealth Edition 44 Black Portable Grill Sycamore, IL

After learning how to grill from his dad and following his footsteps, Ross worked in the kitchens of several restaurants in the Lake Tahoe area. All three of these testers tapped into a network of friends and family who also happen to be culinary experts, from culinary arts professors to professional chefs to BBQ business owners. The grill’s porcelain-enameled, cast-iron cooking grates split into two pieces down the middle. They were easy to remove and clean, however I did let mine soak in the sink overnight with some Dawn Powerwash to later scrape off the burned bits of food. I liked that the Traveler has a removable disposable grease trap (sold in a set of 10) to make cleanup less of a burden. Travel with taste, or grill up a quick meal on your patio with the Jumbo Joe® portable charcoal grill.

It read 500 °F when a meat thermometer probe read 535 °F at grate level. Lid thermometers are generally always higher in a gas grill, because the heat rises and gets caught in the lid, so it’s reasonably weber portable gas grill accurate. Having a single burner is a bit limiting since you can’t set up an indirect cooking zone. There’s enough space here, so it would have been nice to get dual burners for more flexibility.

Aaron has worked in and around kitchens for the better portion of a decade. As a wilderness instructor, he has also taught many hungry teenagers the art of creating delicious meals with small stoves. A long time ago, Ross’s dad was the head chef at the Steak Pit, arguably the best place to get a perfectly seared filet mignon in all of Utah.

The NOMAD portable grill sports a modern design, folding together like a briefcase for carrying, with heat dissipation in mind to keep the exterior cool while cooking. Like the PKGO, the NOMAD can function as a closed grill, or you can use each side independently as a hibachi-style cooker, doubling the cooking space. The magnetic grates stay in place when transported, are slightly domed for strength, and can invert for use as a vegetable cooker basket.

Either that, or carry extra fuel canisters that take up space and create more waste. Smaller grills in the 100- to 150-square-inch range are suitable for one or two people, maybe three in a stretch. First, assembly is a non-issue, as it consists of lining up the grates after taking the grill out of the box, and it took longer to unpack than to make it ready to cook. The cast aluminum body, top, and cast iron grates are built to last, and the included Flipkit turns the two-piece top and bottom into two hibachi grills that double your cooking area. Performance-wise, it cooks consistently across the grates without hot or cool spots. While it is one of the heavier grills we tested, the wheels make moving the grill around a simple task.

However, the Coleman Roadtrip 285 makes up for the portability deficiencies with top-tier grilling performance, easily earning our recommendation for a large-sized portable grill. Two separate burners allow for multiple types of cooking (like searing and indirect heat), as with a standard-size grill. It gets hot and has, as one tester noted, “highly responsible” temperature control. In our tests, it produced “nice golden-brown” steak with “defined grill marks” and a “good crust.” During one test, even a delicate fish filet did not stick to the grates. The Weber Q 1200 remains at the top of our list of tabletop gas grills because it packs the performance of larger grills into a small form.

During the second round, we used the remaining grills to cook fish filets and steak, evaluating both their cooking performance and portability. If you’re not the camping, beachgoing, or apartment-dwelling type, you may see little value in a portable gas grill. A cart is also available, converting the Weber Q from a portable grill to weber portable gas grill your permanent backyard or balcony grill. Its electronic ignition makes it easy to start up, and the sturdy grill body helps to distribute heat for even cooking. Just keep in mind that the grill is bulky to carry, especially when the grates are inside, so it’s not the best option if, for instance, you’re hiking out to a campsite.
