Coleman RoadTrip Classic LX Grill Unboxing and Review

It’s 285 square inches, but for those of us who need a little help imagining just how much room that is, think of it this way – the grill itself is 24″ wide and 12″ deep. That is more than enough room to cook food for a family of four and a guest or two. For its less-than-average price tag, it packs in a ton of features and is easily one of the most versatile portable grills on the market. We like having two dedicated burners as most of the time we are not grilling. And, often when you are camping there is an outdoor grill set up nearby. Outdoor grills are not very user friendly compared to a gas grill, but they are part of the camping experience (and much better for roasting marshmallows).

This is by far one of the most capable portable grills on the market when it comes to what culinary wonders you can create with it. The stove part works similarly to the Coleman PerfectFlow 2-Burner. It is a solid coleman grill burner with good control but not a standout for performance. It simmers okay, but it can be hard to get a tiny flame and hold it. The grill works well if cooking burners or other items that fit on the edges.

You fill the grease tray with some water and the grease falls into the water minimizing flare-ups and making clean-up a breeze. Really, clean-up is amazingly simple and makes this grill worth every penny. Some of the changes that have been made include making the grill easier to clean. The grease tray is now made of metal instead of plastic, and screens have been placed to make sure that food and grease don’t get into places they shouldn’t. Also, reports of the lid and/or handle melting have disappeared as well, because the added heat shield protects the handle from heat. I like to call the Coleman RoadTrip LXE the starter version of the RoadTrip line of portable grills.

Proper ID will be required in the form of a valid, state-

issued driver’s license or state ID card. We reserve the right to limit, or refuse returns without a receipt. If you would like, you could even buy the swap top synonymous cooktops to let you switch grill grates outside for griddle and stove grates. At this time, you’ll have the ability to simmer and sear rather than merely sear.

Also, the lid does not close all the way so it’s harder to melt cheese on a burger. Even with the lid down 80 percent of the way, there is not much room for items taller than a few inches. © 2023, Fortune Media IP Limited All rights reserved. Over the next few years I found as much as I loved this grill I was frustrated with several things. The LXX is permanently mounted to the wheel base which prevented using the grill on a tabletop and was very bulky when trying to store the grill in its carry bag. The grease drippings would stick to the interior under the grates.

are issued to the original form of payment; some exclusions may apply. I have tried a lot of portable grills over the years. Several years back I found the Coleman RoadTrip series of grills. They have several models with different options and colors but they are all from the same mold.

However, when we wanted to make a quesadilla, we found it very hard to keep the edges from getting burned with the center not cooked much at all. The burner is just so close to the grill that it is hard to get an even cook. Compared to all of the other models in our review, transportability is not a strong suit for the Coleman Roadtrip 285. But keep in mind, we compare a lot of shapes and sizes of portable grills in this review. While it doesn’t have the most impressive score for this metric, the Roadtrip 285 is one of the most portable options for larger, wheeled grills.

What really makes this RoadTrip grill a tremendous portable grill is just how easy it is to take with you. Yes, it might have a large cooking surface, but it folds down in a snap. The stand cleverly becomes an extendable coleman grill handle on one side and wheels on the other, making the LXE very easy to wheel down to your favorite beach spot. Instead of the burners being in a side-by-side configuration, the Roadtrip 285’s overlap.
