This is actually a good lantern to set on a picnic table at a state park or national park and illuminate your campsite. That night I purchased an attractive looking limited edition National Park edition of the Coleman Northstar Propane Lantern–in park ranger khaki and green. It is fully adjustable and can be set lower if you are trying to conserve propane. However, if the propane canister is running out, it occasionally makes a rather loud whistling noise. Press the pump handle down and lightly place your finger over the hole in the end. If the pump raises, you need to clean or replace your check valve. Coleman made this mil-spec lantern that is date stamped 1952 on the bottom.

An old or dirty lantern can quickly turn into a raging inferno if you don’t know what you are doing and/or are not careful. It didn’t want to make a spark, so I bent the electrode down to make the gap smaller. That helped a little bit, but it still had a hard time igniting the propane. The LED battery powered lantern is the one you should get.

The globe is stabilized in the frame by an upper plate (middle image) and lower spring clips (upper right image). Takao Kimura, whose collection this is in, and I believe this is Model 216, one of three lanterns noted in the Coleman Shipping Records a couple of months after the 7 9 date. Coleman also made these LZ327 (left) and LZ427 (right) lanterns, known here by their Coleman numbers, for several retailers including Sears and Montgomery Ward. These lanterns have a separate post to support the burner; the air tube, which is curved in these models, opens below the mantles. The lantern on the left is in Doug Dwyer’s collection. The lantern on the right lacks its generator and is in Don Colston’s collection.

The center globe cage base disk is stamped Sunshine Safety Lamp Co., Kansas City, MO. Ian Keates, who bought this lantern in Switzerland for his collection, does not believe that it had been disassembled before. Coleman models 228E (left) and 220E (right) had steel founts. The coleman lantern one on the left, in Dean DeGroff’s collection, is date stamped July 1951, the earliest date we have seen for this model. It lacks the Coleman decal under the filler cap which Coleman started using a couple of months later, as on the right which is date stamped October, 1951.

The two attachments are mounted in the bottom of the case in front of the lantern for transport. Note the alcohol preheating can for the kerosene fueled 237 lantern in the images. This lantern is in a Coleman collection near Sugarcreek, Ohio. For your money, I don’t think that the Coleman Rechargeable Lantern is the best value. It comes across cheaply made, has poor battery life and doesn’t offer many of the features that other lanterns do.
