Schwinn Tailwind e-bike first take

Even with the bike assisting as best it could, climbing the hill required a lot of physical exertion, although it would have been harder without the electric motor. All bikes purchased through City Grounds MUST be assembled by a certified bike shop mechanic. If the bike is NOT built by a certified bike shop mechanic, any warranty will be VOID. We will request for an assembly receipt as proof of professional installation. With spring here and summer just around the corner, the days are steadily getting longer, and that means it’s time to head outdoors. Thoughts of racing a bicycle along a forested single-track trail or a tight city street might soon begin to fill our minds.

When I first started riding electric Schwinns, I was largely limited to cruiser e-bikes. But with several new commuter-specific e-bikes like the Schwinn Coston CE that I recently tested, this household bicycle name is making a big move on the wider e-bike market. Your sales taxes will be calculated at check-out and vary per state. Meanwhile it is possible that you don’t see any sales taxes applied to your purchase. Indeed, Upway being a brand new business in the US, we are required to charge sales taxes only as from a determined level of revenue collected per state. They seem to be quite strong units, and I wouldn’t expect any problems with them, ever. They sweep back at a ~30 degree angle, which is very unusual for most bikes. They feel like they’re almost in your lap while riding, which is a weird feeling. They’re nothing special, but they work quite well. Wrapping the front wheel is a decent enough fender, though it terminates a bit higher in the rear than I’d like for the wet Seattle winters (road spray). This is a 6-7 year old bike, and my particular example has been ridden a good bit, so it’s not in perfect condition.

An interesting feature I’ve not seen before is a wheel lock. The upper horseshoe-shaped thing is a keyed wheel lock that lets you run a metal bar through the spokes. This keeps the rear wheel attached, and also prevents someone from biking off with it. It’s no substitute for a chain, schwinn mountain bike but in a friendly community (such as a retirement community on a lake somewhere), it’s probably good enough. In any case, it’s one of the better stock seats I’ve seen on an electric bike so far. Nice job here – this seat is absolutely suited to what the bike is good for.

All Schwinn e-bikes are Class 2, which are the most widely accepted. They include both pedal assist and throttle functions, with a top speed of 20 MPH. Class 2 e-bikes are approved for use on bike trails in most cities and states.

This offers plenty of cushion for off-road riding, or in case you hit any potholes on the way to work. While each and every Schwinn electric bike comes with a step-through frame, some come with more accessories than others, such as integrated LED lights, fenders, or a rear rack. I mostly used the motor in pedal-assist mode, though I will cover the throttle in the next section. The motor on this bike is very aggressive in that is starts up quickly with even the slightest movement of the pedal, and it goes hard. When riding with level 5 assistance my pedals were free-spinning most of the time even on the highest gear. As a commuter e-bike, I’m also glad to see some good commuter specific parts, like the included fenders and the excellent lighting.

It would be more convenient if it could be left in position on the bike and plugged in. In regards to battery life and range, once again the Coston DX falls behind the pack. Some similarly priced e-bikes like the Juiced RipCurrent S, for example, have ranges upward of 70 miles on a single schwinn road bike charge. The Coston DX claims to have a range of up to only 45 miles, but in my experience it was actually well short of this. The Coston e-bike comes with a typical brick-on-a-string charger that plugs into a normal 110v outlet. Schwinn advertises that it takes about four hours to charge.

On the right is the shifter for the Shimano Nexus 8 speed rear hub. It shows you what gear you’re in (1 is low, 8 is high), and you twist it to shift. Quick, easy, and when properly adjusted, surprisingly nice. I really do like this controller for the shifting. By default, the console shows the battery left, speed, total distance and pedal assist level. All Schwinn electric bikes have a top speed of 20mph.

My testing has been done on gravel roads and wet, muddy trails at around 5° C with a bit of snow on the ground. The battery fits inside the bottom tube of the bike which gives it a sleek look. All in all, this bike offers good performance and quality for its price. The biggest difference between the Coston CE and the Marshall are the lights, fork, and accessories. The Schwinn Marshall is a step-through and standover hybrid designed for commuting and light adventuring. Submitting payment online reserves your spot in our production line.
