Why You Need a Classic Coleman Lantern at the Campground

This lantern is in Dan MacPherson’s collection. We believe this lantern is a Model 221, a kerosene fueled version of their Model 220 above (McRae). The fuel pickup (not shown) is a simple tube and there is a supplementary generator heater threaded into the mixing chamber casting (middle images). After preheating with a torch, a row of small flames come out of the rear of the heater, directed at the upper part of the Q77 generator.

I found the cheapest price to be at Walmart, for around $1.84 each. Place your finger over the hole in the air intake tube where the generator just came out of. Use an air compressor coleman lantern to blow-out the burner assembly by holding the air nozzle under the burner cap(s) and blowing air up into the lantern. This will clear dirt and insect nests out of the tubes.

This model was produced for 10 years beginning in 1954 For the first couple of years the burner cap was ceramic. The lantern coleman lantern on the left is in Jim Fulmer’s collection. Monte Dodge’s 202, running (right), is dated Mar. ’57 and has a metal burner cap.

This test is where the propane lantern shines…literally. Putting out 1500 lumens, it is the brightest of the three. Then it was the gas lantern at 860 lumens, followed by the LED at only 360 lumens. The LED battery powered lantern coleman lantern is the one you should get. After a full season of use, this is the lantern that I always grabbed when I needed light. My second favorite lantern is the gas powered one, and coming in third place is the propane powered lantern.

By November, 1951, Coleman’s Model 200A had been introduced, replacing Model 200 above. These earliest 200A lanterns had green painted steel founts and, by November, also had the Coleman decal. The ball nut on this version of Model L227, dated stamped Feb. 1929, is separate from the vent and the ventilator lacks indentations as above. Coleman shipped Model L227 from Aug. 1927 through Dec. 1932 (Strong cited by Becker).

Remove the fuel filler cap and pour all the old fuel into an approved container for disposal. You can find a local hazardous waste recycling facility by doing an internet search. Most orders are shipped within 48 hours, but may occasionally be delayed a few days. Shipping times quoted are the approximate delivery time once your package reaches the shipping carrier.

There was no other Civil Defense material with the lanterns or the mil-spec boxes they came in. Refillable fuel lanterns seem to be getting more and more scarce – people love their LEDs. However, you can get lanterns that take a Coleman propane tank to save yourself on the filling and pumping efforts and save space on a fuel can.
