Four years later, the first sections of new trail were under construction. We are not suggesting those already in the sport buy one of these for themselves. But, for a relative or a friend who is a beginner with a very small budget, this bike is a no-brainer and worlds better than what you’d get in this price range a few years ago.
The Ozark Trail had its beginnings in the 1970s when a group of public land managers, land owners, and trail users met to discuss the concept of a long-distance hiking trail. A comprehensive state outdoor recreation plan prepared by the state of Missouri in 1975 showed a need for an ozark trail canopy addition of 500 to 900 miles (805 to 1,448 km) of hiking trails. A first meeting in 1976 at Meramec State Park lead to the first draft of the trails proposal in February 1977 and in 1981 the first sections of the trail were under construction. It’s a gateway for those who can’t or simply don’t want to spend a lot of money to go mountain biking and have a good experience while doing it.
The seatback has some slightly padded sections that do at least a little something to enhance comfort, and the armrests are nominally padded, too. But this isn’t the chair you’ll want to spend most of the day in. Recommended for anyone up to 500 pounds who is looking for a basic camp chair.
They perform well enough after a simple mod, but more on that later. The hubs are unbranded, and so are the narrow-looking rims, but it’s nice to see eyelets on them. Kenda’s K1153 tires feature wire beads and are 2.35 inches wide. We were somewhat surprised to see Presta-style valves after decades of Schrader style on bikes like this. There are also built-in rack mounts, a kickstand mount and non-Boost 135mm quick-release-style dropouts.
Keep in mind that lightweight chairs won’t be nearly as comfortable as traditional camping chairs, ozark trail chair so take the word comfortable with a grain of salt.
