The coleman sundome 6 Person tent is great for people who do occasional backpacking and camping. It’s also an excellent choice if you’re looking to get into camping, especially during the spring, summer, or fall in a warmer location, and want to save a bit of cash on your first tent. Note that you really do not have any vestibule like in the other tents which I mentioned in the table above. The small awnings on the front and on the back look great, but they only protect the windows and do not give any extra covered space for the gear.
Even without gear, it’s going to be a fight for floor space. Groups of four or families would definitely be better off investing in a larger model – like the 6 person model. Unless you are planning to use the tent just for sleeping (and keep your gear stored somewhere else) it’s going to be too small for a family of four. For comparison, you should know that an ordinary umbrella is typically around 400 – 500 mm. So use this tent for mild summer situations without much rain and you will be fine.
The rainfly should even be capable of repelling anything beyond sideways rain. In addition, the bathtub floor means there are no seams too near the ground, and your stuff should be well protected if a puddle forms near the edges. However, for two occupants, getting out will require some gymnastics to avoid stepping on your tent mate. The two gear pockets are placed awkwardly along the ends of the tent, where the bug mesh starts. You run the risk of hitting your head if there’s anything heavy in the pocket.
Plan B was to set the tent up on the BSA summer camp standard issue wood platforms covered by an old canvas tent. That plan was ultimately thwarted by all the missing slats in the most level platform I could find. This Coleman tent is only available in green and has 1 zipper door. It weighs 16 pounds 10 ounces, making it super easy to get back and forth from your site and your vehicle.
Other tents can take up to 45 minutes to set up, so this is definitely a win. In terms of windows, you’ll find two large mesh panels on the upper half of the side walls as well as smaller, closeable windows on the back wall and at the top of the front door. The panels provide excellent views on cloudless nights, but these will be lost with the attached rainfly. Although there is only one doorway on the Sundome, it is quite large and should allow for easy entry and exit for one person at a time.

While I have yet to sleep in this tent, I was able to pitch it several times and get a feel for the overall quality and functionality.
