These vintage-inspired bikes feature padded seats and upright riding positions for extra comfort every time you ride. At just $898 with its current Black Friday sale price, the Schwinn EC1 definitely offers more bang for your buck than a lot of other electric bikes out there. But while the Schwinn EC1 isn’t a fancy cruiser, it is a comfortable and pleasurable ride. The 250 W motor doesn’t sound powerful, but when I put it in the highest assist level I don’t have to do any work. I can just lightly spin the pedals to activate the pedal sensor and the motor does all the work for me.
The 250 watt motor could be bigger for this bike to use the throttle regularly and give a better boost on hills. A small, easy to use console is on the left side of the handlebar. It’s got 3 buttons, up down and a power/enter button in the middle. The battery is a 288 watt-hour battery built with cells which takes about 4 hours to charge. The Marshall looks like a mountain bike with a comfy cruiser feel to it.
On flat roads, shifting gears will allow you to put more or less effort into your ride as you please, allowing for a lot of levity in the experience. We didn’t clock our speeds, but the bike can supposedly top about 15 miles per hour on flat ground with the pedal-assist on, and that sounds about right to us. The lowest gear is a nice big ring in the back for helping on those hills. The Marshall ebike has a throttle and 5 pedal assist levels. The pedal assist level only affects the boost you get when pedalling, not the throttle speed. Use the power button on the handlebar controller to activate the pedal assist. Use the “+” and “–“ buttons to select your level of pedal assist.
In my opinion it’s a great setup with everything you need to cruise around town running errands. It’s also great for commuting to work where you can easily remove the battery pack for a quick charge before heading home. The fenders keep you dry while the larger 700c wheels and hybrid tires provide efficiency in coasting.
Otherwise, the headlight is adjustable to your preference, and the rear light is built into the fender itself. What makes me excited about the bike is the possibilities that it opens up, but like a lot of aspects of this bike, it’s something of a double-edged sword. Electric bikes are a ton of fun and I’ve had a great time this summer riding them. As an avid cyclist who commuted to and from the train for years in the past, I see e-bikes as a very reasonable step forward in commuting. Go on a ride around the neighborhood today, a bike path tomorrow, and that new trail on the weekend – a hybrid bike can do it all. Schwinn are now in their second generation of ebikes with the Marshall, Coston CE and DX. Most ebikes just have a big battery hanging off the bottom tube. The middle power/enter button turns the bike on while holding it. The battery has to be on before turning the bike on which got me the first time I tried. While you can ride in light rain or snow if needed, it is not recommended to expose the e-bike to water, as this may damage the battery and other electric components.
In the past, the range you got depended on how much work you were willing to put into it. On my older e-bike (also a Schwinn) I get about the same mongoose bmx 20 miles of range at level 5, but I also get closer to 40 miles at level 3. When you think about EVs, you probably (rightly) think of cars.
No suspension elements but the fork is steel which provides some vibration dampening properties and…… The front fork evens out the bumps on the pavement and the dirt. The mountain bike shape makes it easy to ride on rough trails as well. The balance with the the battery takes a bit to get used to but then it’s all fun anywhere you go.
